Walking Off Alone

An account of 2004 and 2005 high school football seasons in mini review, with the focus on our ability to defy newspaper reporter rankings with heart and unity.

2005 however would be a different story. We had some size to our team, with a couple of big and strong young men on the front line. But literally only a couple. As we would find out later, our center was battling leukemia, we'd lose a running back to injury, and our quarterback had only attempted one previous varsity pass in which he was flagged for intentional grounding. Five and five might actually have seemed a reasonable guess. Through a plethora of different game styles from blow outs (on both ends, wins and losses) to nail-biter Hail Mary finishes, we drove in to the playoffs literally on I-Right 23 Iso on Thanksgiving Day against our arch rival East Haven. That 68 yard drive was led by all members of the Hornet squad in an exemplary display of team camaraderie and hustle; it defined our season saying 'win or lose, were doing it together and with no energy left in the tank at the end of the game'.

So we escaped a few games here and there, losing our starting running back in a loss by 40 points, depleting moral in a day game capped by a now University of Florida sprinter having his own track meet running around our defense and special teams. I suppose the best 'escape' or execution as Mike Olejarczyk (OT/DT) might tell you, was stopping Coventry's running back on at the goal-line for the potential go ahead two point conversion with two seconds left in the semi finals of the playoffs.

Nonetheless, 9-2 and were in the state championship game against East Lyme. Four things about this game defined my sports playing career and the season itself.

One, on both of my touchdown runs my teammates did all of the work. Trey Right 13 QB Counter Trap...Kyle Lynch got the message and delivered monstrous blocks both times, sending the defensive end to the ground. Two, don't believe hype and just play your game. That defensive end had gotten a few Division I football offers and Kyle Lynch, our pulling guard, cannot be more than 5'9'', 185lbs. Heart is what won the battle at the line of scrimmage, not size or that coaches think you'd play well at the next level. Three, crying isn't for losers. I balled for the first time all season starting in the second quarter through halftime and in to the 3rd quarter. I'm not sure if it helped us any, I've just always conveyed my happiness/nervousness/excitedness/anger/any emotion through crying, and I've also participated on numerous winning sports teams. Lastly, preparation is key, and it begins with the coaching staff. East Lyme did not attempt one pass against our defense whilst one cornerback played the game with a broken ankle. Meanwhile, we stuffed their run continuously the whole game as we knew from the minute details provided to us in film sessions by our coaches exactly what play East Lyme was trying to execute.

The championship game itself did not compare to the season as a whole. Every minute of grit and determination in the weight room, on the practice field, in film sessions and on the playing field still doesn't add up to that one defining sports moment of my life. That moment came after balling in TV interviews and giving sporadic answers amidst celebration to newspaper reporters, when the commotion cleared there was nothing but a helmet and myself in the stadium. I hobbled to the helmet, still crying my eyes out. We were on the far sideline from the exit, so I turned around to an empty and silent field. I could hear the racket of celebration continuing to the buses, and then there was I alone with my helmet. I escaped my youth football days unscathed by injury and victorious a state champion, two achievements for which forever I will be grateful. Yet, the defining moment of my athletic career came as I walked towards the exit, which had police keeping fans back at the gates. My teammates, family and friends waited as I wavered towards the exit. My friends that had stopped playing years before, kids I'd share a casual hello but nothing more in the hallways at school, my mother who urged me not to play high school football... Branford had a reason to unite that day, and it wasn't because we eclipsed the 5-5 mark, it's because we had heart and don't read the newspaper.
