Darth Vader Super Bowl 2020 Commercial Force to Be Reckoned With
What do you get when you cross a pint-sized Darth Vader wannabe with dreams of running the universe and a car that can be remotely switched on? A winning Super Bowl commercial, that's what. The 2020 version of the Super Bowl might be over...
At the posting of this article, the number of YouTube hits for the Darth Vader Volkswagen Super Bowl ad has topped 16.4 million. It, along with a few dog-inspired spots for Bud Light and Doritos, and a karmic beaver Bridgestone tire ad seem to have done well with Super Bowl watchers. But only the Darth Vader Super Bowl commercial and the Joan Rivers GoDaddy.co ad remained in the Google Trends list throughout the next day.
So what made the ad work so well?
Everybody seems to know who Darth Vader is. The "Star Wars" character has become a pop culture icon since striding forcefully and menacingly unto the big screen in the mid-1970s. They also know that, despite his evil persona, he ultimately is a redemptive figure in the "Star Wars" saga. Volkswagen took the idea of a kid playing at being the powerful Dark Lord, along with trying to use the powers of "The Force," and wrapped it around a 2020 Passat ad.
What kid hasn't wondered at the ability of the mind to perform acts or of unknown forces to be controlled by the will of the actor? And what kid does not eventually learn that his imagination is often more powerful than his true abilities, that he does not have the wanted power or that the power itself may just be as make-believe as the character he is pretending to be?
In "The Force," the diminutive Dark Lord strides down the hallway (accompanied by the moving John Williams score), attempts to power up washers and a treadmaster, move (perhaps levitate) his dog and a baby doll, before finally giving up the idea, his despondency apparent by his helmet-on-hand appearance.
But the arrival of his father delivers hope anew -- not to mention a fresh target. He rushes past his father to confront the Passat in the driveway, thrusts his hands out, mustering one more time the powers that have been reluctant to help him throughout the day.
And the car starts up, lights blinking.
Tiny Darth Vader jumps back in black-caped astonishment. He can't believe he did it. His father, standing at the kitchen window with his mother, knowingly looks at his wife as he places the Volkswagen's remote key/starter in his pocket. Little Darth suddenly turns back to the house, a "was anyone watching this?" moment.
The commercial ends with the diminutive Lord Vader turning back to the car he just started with the power of the force.
The ad works because it brings back that feeling of childhood wonder in things that were thought to be amazing and magical, before the days of science and pragmatics and experience take hold of the imaginative mind and puts restrictions in place. It also works because it shows the parental need to allow the child just a little more time in that world of Santa Claus and fantasy, magic and wonder that will too soon be left behind.
The critics can talk about which 2020 Super Bowl ad was best. They can set up their Ad Meters and quantify results of viewing audiences. But the measure of a truly effective ad is one that will be remembered long after the Super Bowl and long after its initial advertising run. The Darth Vader commercial seems to be resonating most with viewers and, like the pop culture icon the little guy in the commercial portrays, will no doubt become a classic for the ages.
