'Rocky the Musical?' Why Not 'Rambo the Musical?'

COMMENTARY | Hot Air's Allahpundit notes that "Rocky the Musical" is coming to Broadway, which raises the specter of Rocky Balboa, the obscure pug who gets a shot at a boxing title, breaking out into show tunes in the middle of his training regime.
Not being a fan of either boxing movies (he has not seen any of the Rocky movies) or Broadway musicals, this writer is somewhat ill equipped to judge whether the melding of the two will work. All depends, as with everything else in life, on the execution.
On the other hand, if someone were to actually produce "Rambo the Musical" it might actually be worth shelling out some money for some over priced tickets to see. The merging of show tunes with gun fire, knife work, and exploding arrows would be the greatest spectacle a legitimate theater, as the wine and cheese crowd would say, has seen since Lincoln was shot.
Mining famous movies to take to Broadway has been an old tradition. Usually this works for a comedy, as when Mel Brooks adapted his 1967 movie satire "The Producers" to the stage, which in turn spun off its own movie.
The problem with musicals is that all that singing, usually designed to express the feelings of the characters, tends to interrupt the action, bringing it to a stop. If the musical performance is well done, this might not be a problem. But one notes that Broadway show tunes tend to follow a set formula, big, broad, and often more than a little bombastic.
A case in point of how this can undermine a play is the 2020 musical "The Pirate Queen," about the life and times of the 16th Century Irish buccaneer Grace O'Malley. It opened and closed rather quickly after just 85 performances and lackluster reviews and attendance.
The main problem, in this writer's mind, was the music. The story of Grace O'Malley cried out for Celtic and period style music, say in the style of Clanaad or the Chieftains. Instead the play stuck to the banal style of Broadway show tunes, which was a keen disappointment and a missed opportunity to make a classic.
