How to Avoid Getting Shin Splints

Take it from me, shin splints are a real pain. It's best to avoid and prevent a problem, so check out these helpful hints before you plan on running.

In an attempt to lessen the chances for people who will repeat the mistakes I already made, I've come up with a short list of the things you can do to avoid shin splints. Here it is:

gt;Take the time to strengthen the lower half of your body.

Our lower body is the one that is put on the test when we are running. So, it is best that you take all methods possible to prepare it for the work ahead. Try to do weight bearing exercises such as calf presses and toe raises. Remember that these exercises must be done on a regular basis.

gt;Stretch before and after running.

This, I think, is one of the most common things that a beginning runner seems to always forget. Stretching before a run could help prevent damages in your connective tissues. Stretches could also perk you up. After a run, never forget to do cooling down stretches. These stretches will help ease the tension in your muscles. It also helps your body relax. Seated shin and calf stretches are one of the most vital stretching exercises you must do before a run. Try to look for cooling down exercises for runners on the Internet. Your running coach is also likely to know the most recommendable cooling down stretches.

gt;Do not over stride.

As a runner, you might feel the impulse to over stride. I suggest that you never do that. Over striding could affect your gait. You might become clumsy and jarring along the way. Just be patient. Maintain the shortness of your stride by keeping your knees slightly bent. Doing so will ensure that your heels are just under your body.

gt;Invest in the perfect running shoes.

Your pair of running shoes is your one and only ultimate protection when you are running. Never run in uncomfortable shoes. Find the right shoe that will give the much needed support. As a general rule, shoe cushion must match the runner's weight. The heavier the runner the more cushion they will need.
