Princess Cruise Lines: Stop Slandering the Safety of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
Puerto Vallarta is a very safe city. How safe are Princess cruises?
The FBI reported 65,642 murders committed in the United States between 2020 and 2020, and their preliminary data for 2020 indicates that 14,570 murders more were committed in the US in 2020. A total of 80,212 murders committed in the United States between 2020 and 2020; 34,162 in Mexico, with over 95% of those committed in Mexico in 85 of it 2,500+ municipalities.
More than 95% of the murders in Mexico were committed in Ciudad Juarez and 84 more municipalities in the states of Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas and Guerrero. 44% of all in the state of Chihuahua alone.
Violence is horrific in less than 1% of Mexico's 761,606 square miles. That less than 1% has a much higher murder rate per capita than almost everywhere else in the world; but that less than 1% is far, far away from Puerto Vallarta and the vast majority of Mexico's territory.
85 municipalities, in three states --hundreds of miles away from Puerto Vallarta-- have a serious murder problem. The rest of Mexico's 2,500+ municipalities and its remaining 28 states are safer than most places in the United States.
The widely publicized assassination of a full-time resident of Puerto Vallarta, who happened to be Canadian, while painful to his family and very regrettable, had absolutely nothing to do with the literally hundreds of thousands of tourists who visit Puerto Vallarta every year or, even, with the tens of thousands expats who call Puerto Vallarta home. The victim opened his door, wearing only his boxer shorts --when his wife was not home--, to the perpetrator or perpetrators; it is clear that this was not a random act of violence. According to all who knew the victim, he was an extraordinarily cautious man who never unlocked his door before verifying the identity of the caller via interphone and would have never opened his door, almost naked, to anyone other than a very close acquaintance.
There is crime in Mexico, yes. Murders are committed in the country, of course. Just as there is crime, and murders are committed, everywhere on Earth, unfortunately.
Over 1 million US Citizens live in Mexico full time --tens of thousands of them in Puerto Vallarta--, and over 8 million more visit the country --more than 600,000 visit Puerto Vallarta-- each year.
An estimated 111 US citizens were killed in Mexico in 2020 (just about on par with Boston, MA; and much less than in Detroit, Baltimore, New Orleans or several other cities in the US), according to the US State Department and FBI crime statistics. Most of these, again according to the US State Department, were involved in illegal activities themselves (i.e. drug purchases, money laundering, gun sales, human trafficking, etc.)
Many of those killed in Mexico were murdered with weapons provided by the US Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to the criminals.
The sustained attack on Mexico's image, mostly by the US and Mexican media, is unprecedented in terms of its scope and distortion of the facts. The allegations of wide-spread violence in Mexico are inflammatory and baseless for the most part.
When viewed in the proper context, 99% of Mexico is safer than 99% of the United States and many other places in the world.
A clear example of this bias is the media attention to Princess Cruise Lines (PCL) libelous press release announcing the cancellation of three port visits to Puerto Vallarta alleging that the "continued violence" in that port-city forced them to do it, falsely arguing that a US Department of State Travel Warning stated that Puerto Vallarta was unsafe.
Puerto Vallarta has never been labeled by the US Department of State as unsafe, not even remotely.
In fact, Puerto Vallarta has much lower criminality than Long Beach, CA --PCL's headquarters--, Bermuda, Bahamas, Jamaica and most other destinations visited by Princess Cruise Lines.
Not surprisingly, Carnival Cruises --PCL's sister company. Both are owned by Carnival Corporatio-- continues sailing to Puerto Vallarta, together with Holland America, Royal Caribbean and Disney Cruises. PCL itself will continue visiting Puerto Vallarta through November 2020 and again in 2020; PCL canceled only THREE port visits scheduled for November and December, 2020.
For a true picture of what tourists and residents of Puerto Vallarta know about the "violence" in that 325,000 population port-city, I invite all to visit:
Princess Cruise Lines: Stop slandering the safety of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
Read the comments there, and, if you are so inclined, join the campaign, by all means!
Puerto Vallarta and 99% of Mexico are much safer than 99% of the United States. Enough lies!
Can we say the same about the safety aboard Princess Cruise Lines ships? Does Princess Cruise Lines really care about the safety of their passengers? The Evidence seems to indicate they don't:
Princess Cruises Crew Member Arrested for "Sex Attack" Aboard Caribbean Princess Cruise Ship
Princess Cruises Captain Pleads Guilty to Sex Crime Against Minor Girl on Princess Cruise Ship
Lawsuit: Woman Claims a Princess Cruise Line Employee with a History of Sexual Misconduct Assaulted Her
Unsafe on the "Love Boat"? -- Sexual Assault on Princess Cruise Ships
These incidents are not isolated cases. Sexual assault, rape and other crimes are commonplace aboard Princess Cruise Line ships. So much that in 2020 the US Congress enacted the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act, until then no government agency was responsible to track cruise ship crime.
This Act, unfortunately, only covers ships docking in the US. Captains still claim lack of jurisdiction from local authorities almost everywhere, shielding themselves and their crews behind their flags of convenience.
