It Turns Out that Nature's Carrion Eaters Will Take Care of the Zombie Apocalypse
“The Walking Dead” and a host of movies dating back to “Night of the Living Dead” have depicted the zombie apocalypse overrunning the world as hordes of the undead shamble about, devouring the flesh of the living.
"The Walking Dead" and a host of movies dating back to "Night of the Living Dead" have depicted the zombie apocalypse overrunning the world as hordes of the undead shamble about, devouring the flesh of the living.
However, just as it dealt with the invasion of the Martians in "War of the Worlds," nature itself would be far more effective in dealing with the zombie apocalypse than groups of people with shot guns and axes, suggests David Mizejewski, a naturalist and a personality for the National Wildlife Federation. That is because nature is very efficient with dealing with carrion and what are zombies but walking, biting carrion?
While the hordes of zombies shambled about the now empty cities and throughout the countryside, carrion eaters, especially birds and insects, would descend upon them and start to consume them. North American mega fauna, like bears and predator cats like mountain lions and jaguars, would hunt them for food. Down south especially, alligators would feast on the undead that happened to find themselves in swamps and near bodies of water. Herds of bison and elk would gore and trample zombies with ease. Most of all, bacteria, nature's decomposing agent, would slowly but steadily consume the undead flesh of the zombies.
This suggests an alternate survival strategy for living during the zombie apocalypse. All that would be necessary to do would be to hold out in a secure location - a cold war era fallout shelter would do - with plenty of supplies, for perhaps a year, and simply wait out the zombies. Sooner or later nature will do the work, taking care of the hordes of the walking dead, leaving behind fields full of bones.
Then the living survivors can emerged and start to reclaim the empty world. Little need to dodge hordes of flesh eating undead, so long as one has prepared in advance. Even if one hasn't, if one survives the initial weeks necessary to gather food and other supplies and to barricade a shelter, then one will be alright.
