Top 10 Longest Running TV Adventure Series

Sometimes we want an adventure to never end. Here are some of the longest running TV adventures we have enjoyed through the years

10. Gilligan's Island - In 1964 The SS Minnow set shore for a three hour tour. This tour became an adventure that lasted six years. With nothing but coconuts and imagination our crew of shipwrecked passengers began an adventure that was hysterical. In the TV series the crew never did get off the island, but in a made for TV movie in 1981, the adventure was finally to end. Or so it seemed, as the shipwrecked decided that the adventures they had in their mind about home were no where near as good as the adventures they had on the island. Today Gilligan and his friends live on in syndication.

9. Fantasy Island - Sometimes the adventure begins in movies. This was the case with Fantasy Island in 1977. Mr. Rourke and Tattoo captivated viewers from the beauty of a mysterious Island that promised adventures that would fill your every fantasy. For a price you could have an unforgettable adventure that might lead to important life realizations. In seven years there were no shortages of fantasy to be found, but finally in 1984 the planes flew in no more. In 1998 we enjoyed one final year of adventure and fantasy but it appears the total adventure could only muster eight years of steam. Fantasies being as they are hint that the adventure might still be possible if only someone would wish for it. In 2020 it seems Eddie Murphy might have made a wish to return to Fantasy Island so this adventure remains uncertain.

8. Wagon Train - In 1957 the Wagon Train western series pulled out from Missouri to make it's way to California. To the delight of viewers the adventures did not end. It didn't matter if it were drought, or marauding Indians, we tuned in. We were right there to share in the adventure for nine years. In case adventuring across the states was not interesting enough, this show pushed the adventure across broadcast networks in 1962. Three years later the adventure finally ended. Twelve years and loads of supporting cast members made this adventure worth every minute.

7. Lassie - Who could ever forget Lassie, beginning in 1954 we watched Lassie and Timmy adventure through the American farm lands. Had it not been for the beautiful and intelligent Collie named Lassie, little Timmy's adventures would have been short lived. Lassie was there to save Timmy from wells, and snakes and whatever other misadventure he could find. At the end of the day, it was all in the name of boyhood adventure and love of one special dog. Thank you for nineteen years and two Emmys Lassie! Lassie continues to adventure on in the land of DVD's.

6. The Lone Ranger - Sometimes the adventures we listen to on the radio cross to the TV screen. In 1933 The Lone Ranger was born on the radio in Detroit, Michigan. Folks tuned in waiting to share the adventures they could only hear. That lasted until 1949 when the Lone Ranger and Silver galloped onto the TV screen. No adventure could be complete without the Lone Rangers faithful side kick Tonto. Despite numerous attempts at resuscitation the popular adventure it seemed the Lone Ranger would only enjoy twenty four years of adventures on the range. However in 2020 rumor started that Disney might be writing a script of some new adventures for the Lone Ranger that could include Johnny Depp as Tonto. So keep that rTV dial tuned there could be a Hi Ho Silver in the near future.

5. The Undersea World of Jacques-Yves Cousteau - While Marlin Perkins ruled the animal kingdom. Jacques Cousteau and the crew of the Calypso were very busy taking us on an adventure of the seas. Since 1966 we found the French born Cousteau all to willing to dive right into adventure. Beautiful oceanography and ecological awareness were the theme of this tireless adventurer. For Twenty nine years we watched and understood the importance of the deep blue sea. Sadly Jacques Cousteau left us in 1997 but his wonderful books and film documentaries live on to give credit where credit is due.

4. Wild Kingdom - In 1963 Marlin Perkins with the help of Mutual of Omaha and his friend Jim took us on an adventure to discover animals in their natural habitats. From 1963 the series enjoyed 25 years of popularity despite the fact the familiar face of Marlin Perkins left us forever in 1988. Jim was left to carry on and stand as a testimony of an adventure not to be forgotten, Wild Kingdom returned in 2002 and found a new home on the cable network Animal Planet. Thirty two years and counting reminds us that an adventure can be found within the confines of our own planet, even if we just want to watch it on TV.

3. Scooby Doo Where are you? - Having the distinction of being the longest running Saturday morning cartoon, we salute Scooby Doo. No adventure could ever be to scary if there was a Scooby snack in the mix. No matter where Scooby and his friends went the ghosts and mysteries seemed to follow, and they appear to be continuing this adventurous trend in the world of movies and cartoons. Forty years is an awful long time in dogs years, but that's okay. Scooby keeps in shape for all his adventures by running away from all those ghosts.

2. Star Trek - Since 1966 the crew of the Starship Enterprise promised to boldly go where no man has gone before. The adventure lasts till this day. The cast may have changed but the appeal remains. In the beginning we were mesmerized by the thoughts of communicators, transporters and strange exotic planets. This adventure looks like it has no intention at ending anytime soon. At forty years and counting we are promised an exciting new movie adventure this year. This could be the top adventure of this summer. Star Trek may you live long and prosper.

1. Adventures of Superman - Superman actually started his adventure back in 1938 as a comic book character. In 1951 Superman made the jump to television, where he has the distinction of being the longest running of our adventure series participants. From 1951 till present, we have watched Superman's adventures go from black and white TV, to movies and Saturday morning comics. The man from Krypton never stopped giving us adventures. The actors that have played on the series and the big screen have been equally as adventurous and unforgettable, reminding us that men of steel have weaknesses to. For being an adventurous force for close to seventy years, Superman is number one.
