In Depth Review of Sniper: Ghost Warrior
Sniper: Ghost Warrior puts the player in the shoes of a sniper deep in the jungles of enemy territory
Gameplay
I have mixed feelings about the game play. Stealth is a big part of Ghost Warrior and certain areas will require to make it through the check points without alerting the guards, which can be done by either picking off the stragglers or completely avoiding them by crawling through tall grass and not being in their line of sight. It can get a little frustrating when you're spotted for no apparent reason, despite being as stealthy as possible or when you shoot a guard who you believe is far enough away not to alert anyone but the siren whines anyway. One other frustrating element is how sometimes guards know exactly where you are even though it would be pretty impossible; like behind tucked away on the edge of a cliff, taking out a guard in a tower and then all of a sudden every gun blazing points right at you.
Because the emphasis is on sniping, Ghost Warrior adds a lot of unique elements that make it distinctive from other shooters when it comes to the sniper rifle. Forget about taking down an enemy from 1000 yards by putting him right between your sights like in Call of Duty, Ghost Warrior adds that extra realism by forcing the player to take into account external factors before taking the shot. Just like in real life, bullets don't go in straight lines forever and the greater the distance you are from the target, the more you need to adjust your aim to compensate for bullet drop. Wind strength can take a bullet off course and your character's stress level can cause his aim to waiver. Ghost Warrior adds those extra variables to give players a more realistic look at using a weapon like a sniper rifle.
Graphics
The game really looks great. The jungle forest is lush and extremely detailed; the shading in the environment and on the character along with the reflective water completely immerses the player in this dangerous forest in the heart of enemy territory. The enemies are detailed and highly textured despite all looking pretty much the same through each level. Because this is a very new game, I wouldn't expect anything less in the graphics department, but the visuals are impressive nonetheless.
Replayability
As far a replayability goes, probably one run through is enough unless you're feeling timid in the beginning and choose a low difficulty and want to try again at a higher one. Or maybe you want to be a little more sneaky the 2nd time around.
Difficulty
The player can choose between easy, medium and hard, I recommend an easy or medium setting for those not adept at shooting for accuracy.
Likes
● I like the emphasis on stealth, you don't see many games that require such patience and timing.
● Picking off enemies at long range can be very gratifying
● The graphics are visually stunning, especially the level of the detail in the jungle
Dislikes
● The AI can be a little annoying when it has the uncanny ability to find where you are and riddle you with bullets
● A deeper and more complex story would have made the game a bit better and given it more replayability
Final Verdict
As far as sniping games go, Ghost Warrior isn't half bad and anyone with the patience to experience a more realistic shooter I would recommend this game. 6.5 out of 10
