Tips for the Beginning Free Runner
A few tips on how to start Free Running.
1. Start Small
It may seem silly, but start by simply jumping over and around things. My first Free Running session involved jumping over a low park bench and balancing on parking blocks. Starting off small like this will help you get a feel for how strong and responsive your body really is. This will make it easier to move to the more advanced moves.
2. Find Friends
It always helps to train with friends, whether they are experienced or not. Obviously, experienced Free Runners will help you fix your mistakes and perfect your flow. Training with fellow beginners will help you learn from each others' mistakes. It will also help as you each begin to specialize in various techniques. One of you may be really good at wall runs and the other at vaults. You can then help each other learn each of those moves.
3. Tuck and Roll
The roll is the single most important concept to practice. Spend a large majority, I would say about 45 minutes for every two hours that you practice just doing rolls. Failure to roll or an improper roll will result in serious injury later on.
4. Move Around
This also may sound silly, but don't train in the same area all of the time. If you do, you will become too accustomed to the area and will be less likely to try out new moves. You will know what the 'coolest' or easiest moves are in this area and perform them over and over again. You won't be making as much progress in your training staying in one place. Moving around from area to area to practice forces you to try different moves and become an overall well rounded Free Runner.
5. Don't be Stupid
Some moves should never be performed alone and some should never be performed ever. Don't do anything that will hurt yourself or others. Free Running is not all about doing to most daring moves, it's about moving quickly and elegantly through your environment.
6. Be Respectful
This last tip is really important. Practicing Free Running often requires the use of public property such as parks and buildings. Free Running is still a growing phenomenon, so there are plenty of people who think you are just trying to be Spider-Man or by Free Running you are defiling their public property. So, if a law officer or civilian asks you to stop, respectfully explain to them what you are doing and why. I tend to tell them I am Free Running to train for Parkour and explain the concept of Parkour. Usually, the person will be understanding and allow you to continue. Others will be hard-headed and ask you to stop even though you aren't doing anything wrong. But, it is important to be respectful and obey all rules and laws.
