Is an Online Degree Right for You?

Whether you are fresh out of high school or are looking to go back to school to expand your opportunity, you may be considering an online degree. Here are some ways to answer the question "Is an online degree right for me?"

Can You Work Well Independently?
If you do better with someone else making your schedule, an online degree program may not be the best option for you. Self-discipline is a must when attending an online college. While some do have a strict schedule, others may be lenient on exact completion times. Either way, it is up to you to be sure that work is completed on time.

Do Your Career Choices Offer an Online Degree?
Some career choices offer an online degree program, while others do not. Many offer a degree for certain steps in the process. Know exactly what type of degree you will need and do the research to be sure the online degree you have interest in is valid for that. Some career choices may not offer an online degree, due to certain hands-on skills.

Do You Have Reliable Computer and Internet Access?
In order to obtain an online degree, it is necessary to have access to a reliable computer and Internet connection. Preferably, this would be your own computer. Because much of your coursework and assignments will be completed and/or submitted via the computer and Internet, you must maintain a viable option.

Is the Degree Compatible With the State of Choice for Your Career?
Some career choices require that a degree be compatible with various options pertaining to that particular state. For instance, someone earning a teaching degree will need to be state-certified in order to teach. Not all online degree programs will offer this necessary certification. It's important to ask questions and research a program for getting started. Be sure that the online degree you are interested in earning is compatible with not only your career choice, but state of choice where applicable.

Be Attentive to Your Learning Style
Do you learn well by reading something, doing something, seeing a demonstration, listening to a speaker, or another method? Pay attention to the ways you learn best. Research the online options for the degree you desire. Before signing up, be sure the degree program includes instructional methods that line up with your learning style.

Cost Versus Convenience
Online degrees can be less expensive than going to traditional campus. However, they also can be more. Do the research to determine which method gives you the most value and the most convenience. If you live two blocks away from a college you are interested in, if accepted you may prefer to attend there instead of earning an online degree. Also in line with convenience is the option of transferring credits. Should you decide mid-degree that you prefer to attend school on-campus instead of online, are your credits going to be transferable? Are they only valid with that particular college? If so and you change your mind about online school, you just wasted your time and money.
