"Lincoln" (2020) was Epic and Useless
Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" has it all: uplifting speeches, great performances not to mention Spielberg's undeniable talent to direct a film yet I wouldn't call it perfect. I thought it was a little too long and a wee bit too sugar coated.
We meet Abraham Lincoln (Day-Lewis) during the times of his second term so the civil war had been going on for quite some time. The film really revolves around the proceedings that took place before the 13th Amendment which abolishes slavery from the United States of America. Going through the highlights of the movie, of course everyone was great but Daniel Day-Lewis' performance was impeccable but Tommy Lee Jones really shook me to the core. I'm not saying everyone else was weak but these are the people who stood out for me.
What were the problems with this film? First off I was pretty disappointed with Joseph Gordon-Levitt's performance and screen time, what was the point of his being there if he wasn't going to do much? It was pretty close to a cameo. Another problem which I've already spoken about earlier but here it is again, bombarding us with so many inspiring moments kind of diminish the whole thing...I wasn't too inspired. The last thing I'm going to say may be a little out of context but it's what started to hover over me as I was watching this movie: being inspired by past accomplishments. Why are we clinging to these accomplishments? It's like saying "Let's just be happy slavery doesn't exist anymore." Why should I be happy about that? I'm glad it's done with but why aren't we moving forward? I don't know should I be thinking this way? OK so did I get my Phix? Would I recommend this film? Only mildly, rent it perhaps.
