Unique Boston Tourist Sites from the Typical to the Less Frequented

From the typical to the less traveled destinations.

One of the most obvious tourist sites to see is the historical sites and Boston and Massachusetts has plenty of historical tourist sties to spare. Some of the major places that people like to go visit are Plymouth and Plymouth Rock. In Plymouth you can see a exact replica of the Mayflower and when you see how small it was and then learn how many people actually were on its first voyage (the Mayflower made multiple voyages to Plymouth) you will be even more surprised. You can also see some of the Pilgrims homes. A odd little side trip you might want to take in Plymouth is the Cranberry factory tour it is actually interesting to learn how they grow cranberries and it is nice to taste all the different Cranberry drinks at the end especially if you are there on a warm and humid New England summer.

Not long after the pilgrims came to America the Commonwealth (technically Massachusetts is a commonwealth not a state) of Massachusetts founded the oldest and most well known college in the year 1636. Harvard offers tours given by students of the campus during the summer months. Be careful though not all that is said is true but one fun thing to do is to run the John Harvard statues shoe for good luck like the Harvard students do before a test. Many people visit Harvard as it is one of the world's most famous universities and many of its schools are not only the best in the country but even in the world. Harvard has some interesting places to see even if you are not a student. You will be slightly limited for instance you wont be able to get into the dorms or the large cathedral like building known as Memorial Hall where the Freshman dine together which was designed by the father of American architecture William Ware (yes B.Ware does have a relationship to Robert Ware) which inside is often compared to the dinning hall from Harry Potter which is understandable as they were both designed after the same dinning hall at Oxford. One of the buildings on campus is where Washington once stayed and a plaque marks the spot though the fact it is the only yellow building might also give it away. Harvard also has many museums that are open to the public and even free on Saturday mornings. One of the most unique of these is the Harvard Natural History Museum where you see stuffed Dodo birds, the Harvardsaurs (actually dug up near Yale of all places), tape worms from early prominent settlers such as John Winthrop and John Adams (why no one knows), many stuffed animals, (seeing the real life size of a polar bear is a must) and the jewel of the museum is the Ware glass flowers (not just because they are Ware) which the secret of there making glass that looks like plastic is still unknown to this day.

The Boston area offers many other locations of historical interest. You might be interested to see where the Salem with trial took place. The reality is when you go all the popular tourist sites like the witch museums and the pirate museum are in Salem but the Salem with hunt actually took place in Salem village which is now Danvers and the present day Salem is actually Salem town which is not where the witch hunt took place. If you talk to locals they will tell you how to get to the actual locations that the witch trials took place. The witch museums and the Pirate museum are still worth a look into just know that you are not really where the events you learned in History class took place. A side trip in Salem you might want to make is to see the House of Seven Gables, which was owned by Hawthorne and his family and is the house the book is about.

A tourist trip to Boston would not be complete without visiting many of the Revolutionary War sites. You can go see where the Boston Massacre took place though it is in the middle of a busy road so you can only walk over it quickly. You can see the Old North Church as well as Paul Reveres home. Across the Charles from Boston is Bunker Hill one of the major early battles of the War. If you venture out to Concord and Lexington you can see where the war started. It can be amusing saying at each location that you thought the war started at the other and see the people argue that it really started in there city. If you are going out to Concord and Lexington you can also see some other interesting sites besides where the fist shots of the Revolutionary War were first fired. Many famous writers called Concord home and you can see their houses. Among the houses that can be seen are Emerson's, Alcott, one of Hawthorne's houses, and even the shack (reproduction) on Walden that Thoreau once lived in.

As you can see Boston offer tons of unique tourist attractions and we have not even begun to cover all the amazing places to see such as Fenway the oldest professional league baseball stadium, taking a WWII duck tour of the bay or any other fun and unique tourist attractions of the Boston area.
