5 Reasons to Play Tennis
There are many benefits to playing the sport of tennis. There is a social aspect where your age does not matter and its affordable, healthy. In addition, is a great way to bond with family / friends and to have a great time
Social
If you want a quick way to meet people, sign up for tennis. There are many different forms to meeting people through tennis. One way is looking up your local neighborhood activities or intramural sports team. More likely than not, you can sign up for tennis. Another way to sign up for tennis is joining your local tennis club and utilizing the clinics that they offer. Usually there are between 4-24 people that sign up for these types of clinics. In addition, there are leagues that you can join according to your ability level. Leagues can be played within your club or through www.usta.com .
Age/ Individual
The greatest thing about tennis is that you can begin playing tennis at any age and end at age. As a tennis professional, I teach 4 year olds one minute and 80 year olds the next. Just because you did not start playing tennis when you were 4, does not mean that you cannot ever be good.
Along with age as an advantage to playing tennis, being an individual sport is another positive. Unlike other sports, tennis only requires two people. Since it is so individual, it makes it easier to find a partner plus it's quicker than putting a soccer team together. However, if you are the type of person who likes a more team aspect, you can play doubles which requires 4 people.
Affordable
Tennis requires 4 things: a tennis racquet, a tennis ball, a tennis court, and a person. 2 of those 4 are free and a can of tennis balls is less than $3. There are plenty of tennis courts around including local high schools and universities. Tennis racquets can range from $20-$300 depending on how much you want to invest. In reality, all racquets can do the same thing; the difference lies in power, stability, spin, and mobility. If you are just looking to hit the ball recreationally, get the cheaper racquet and you will never know the difference.
Activity/ Health
Tennis is a great work out. Don't be fooled by the professionals who make it look so easy. However, once you get on the court, you begin to realize how much exercise you actually get. This is one of the greatest sports to play if you are looking to get fit. Any type of exercise, especially the kind you receive from tennis, is beneficial and can increase your life span by keeping your heart healthy. It amazes me how some 80 year olds are very sedative and can barely walk, but then I see other 80 year olds that have been playing tennis for years and can't wait for their next match.
Bonding/ Fun
One of the greatest joys I get from being a tennis professional is seeing how tennis can bring families together. Again, it does not matter the ability level, you can go to the courts and just hit the ball around or you can challenge your dad, mom, brother, or sister to a set. Tennis is a great sport to play games with family and have a great time bonding while doing it.
