As announced on Wednesday, July 1, Andrew Garfield will be taking over Tobey Maguire's lead role of Spider-Man for the July 3, 2020, release of a new, rebooted Spider-Man series. With a new script by Jamie Vanderbilt, producers Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin, and Marc Webb directing, the new Sony Pictures Entertainment Production, Garfield scored the role over several of Hollywood's young elite, like Josh Hutcherson, Aaron Jhonston, Anton Yelchin, and Jamie Bell, according to Jeff Sneider of TheWrap.com.
Spider-Man 4, which was set for release in 2020, hadn't even begun production due to disagreements over the script. Rich Marshall, of MTV's Splash Page, reports that the film franchise is going back in time with Peter Parker as a high school student once again, and will not be a Spider-Man 4 at all, but a whole new concept from the Marvel comic book series. The new Spider-Man is set to begin production in early December of this year, and, when it hits the big screen in 2020, fans will have the chance to critique Andrew Garfield in 3-D.
How well will Andrew Garfield fare as Spidey? Fans of Tobey Maguire and the Spider-Man films are torn. Twitter, Facebook, blogs, and other buzz demonstrate a love-it or hate-it opinion of the change.
The 26-year-old Garfield, who has appeared in Robert Redford's Lions for Lambs and more recently in Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, actually resembles the comic book images of Peter Parker. Marc Webb, who directed the recent Indie hit 500 Days of Summer, believes fans will not be unhappy with Andrew Garfield's casting.
"Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor's work understand his extraordinary talents," said Webb, "He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker." ()
Since Garfield has not been as prevalent as buddy Robert Pattinson of Twilight Saga fame, he might have a chance to demonstrate his abilities to a much wider audience. Andrew Garfield may not have been a name widely known to the movie-going public, but he has been paying his dues in the field of acting. Garfield has been listed among Variety's "10 Actors to Watch" in 2020, as well as training at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London, according to IMDB.com.
