'Star Trek' Shuttlecraft 'Galileo' on Display at Space Center Houston

Space Center Houston may have been denied the privilege to display a space shuttle orbiter that actually flew in space, having to content itself with a mockup training article. But it will be the venue of an almost as famous, albeit fictional shuttlecraft.

Thanks to the restoring efforts of Adam Schneider, a "Star Trek" fan and restorer, the shuttlecraft Galileo will be on permanent display at Space Center Houston, looking much as it did when it served as a minor set (or a major prop depending on how one looks at it) in the original "Star Trek" series, according to SyFy Dvice.

Schneider had found the Galileo at auction, very much the worse for wear after decades of disuse, with wood rotting and metal cracking. He bought the Galileo for $7,000 and doubtlessly spent as much or more restoring it to what it looked like when it appeared in the 1960s era series. After entertaining requests from a number of locations, Space Center Houston, which serves as part museum, part visitors center, and part education facility next to NASA's Johnson Spaceflight Center, was chosen.

Galileo was featured in a number of classic "Star Trek" series, most prominently in one entitled "The Galileo Seven." In the episode, the science officer of the star ship USS Enterprise takes the Galileo shuttlecraft to investigate a quasar-like phenomenon while the Enterprise proceeds on to deliver medical supplies to a nearby space colony. However the Galileo is forced to land on a nearby planet, Taurus II, and is out of communications with the Enterprise.

The episode is noted for how it depicts the limitations of Spock's philosophy of logic while leading a crew of humans in a dangerous situation. His adherence to logic not only leads him to make mistakes, but also to cause tension between himself and the crew, especially his old antagonist, Chief Medical Officer Dr. McCoy. It is only when Spock jettisons logic and takes an uncharacteristic leap of faith that he is able to save the day and save himself and most of his crew.

It should be noted that "Star Trek" and the real space program has another association, due to the fact that the first space shuttle, "Enterprise," was thus named in the 1970s thanks to a campaign by "Star Trek" fans. Enterprise, which never flew in space, is currently on display at the Intrepid Museum in New York City.
