Lords of Corruption, the latest thriller by Kyle Mills, is the story of a young man named Josh Hagarty, whose life of bad luck and hard scrabble living seems about to change when he is offered a job running a project in Africa for an obscure charity.
Unfortunately, Josh slowly finds out that the charity he is working for, while ostensibly helping African farmers to become self sufficient, it is in fact a criminal enterprise funneling large amounts of money, meant to help Africans, to dubious sources, including a Russian mafia chief and the dictator of the African country where Josh is working. Worse, Josh finds out that his predecessor was murdered by Gideon, his African guide, when he started asking too many questions.
Lords of Corruption works because it puts its protagonist in what seems to be an impossible situation. Josh Hagarty, well meaning that he is, is trapped inside an African hell hole with almost everyone's hand against him.
Not that Josh doesn't have allies. He finds help in the form of a cynical American reporter and a statuesque, Scandinavian aid worker.
Worse, Josh has to worry about his little sister, Laura, who is being used as leverage to ensure his continued cooperation.
Lords of Corruption is fascinating also for the portrait of modern Africa it presents in an unflinching, unvarnished way. Why is Africa the mess that it is? Part of the reason seems to be the practice of European colonialists of creating countries that jammed together tribal enemies. More than one African country is wracked continuously with civil war because blood enemies live cheek to jowl on the same real estate.
Josh Hagarty, like many other Americans, finds that helping Africans is a little more complicated than handing out aid parcels or teaching people agricultural techniques. Civil society in much of Africa is dysfunctional and people have often given themselves up to either sullen despair or homicidal rage.
The dictator of the African country where Josh Hagarty finds himself, while certainly a thug, is not an over the top madman like Idi Amin or Robert Mugabe. He actually thinks that he is doing the best he can for his people, which happens not to be his country, but rather his tribe. There is a rebellion smoldering in the bush from a minority tribe.
Lords of Corruption is a taunt, suspenseful thriller with lots of twists and turns. Several times during the narrative, one thinks that young Mr. Hagarty has had it, but somehow he manages to pull through. Reading about how he does it is very enjoyable.
