Running a Fan by a Sleeping Baby Reduces the Risk of SIDS: Lower the Risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome by Putting Baby on His Back to Sleep and Running a Fan Near His Face

Circulating the air around the baby prevents him from re-inhaling Carbon Dioxide.

SIDS is responsible for approximately 1 death per 2000 in the United States. The diagnosis of SIDS is made after an autopsy

Investigation of the scene and circumstances of the death

Exploration of the medical history of the infant and family

In 1992 the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Program called Back to Sleep urged parents to put babies to sleep on their backs. This program is credited with saving 1500 babies a year.

Today new information urges parents to use a fan in a baby's room while the infant is sleeping.

The Kaiser Permanente Foundation Studies found that "back to sleep" and running a fan by the sleeping baby reduced SIDS risk by 72 percent.

The study suggests that a fan circulating air while the baby is sleeping reduces the risk of SIDS primarily because the carbon dioxide the baby breathes out is re-circulated around the room and not re-inhaled by the baby.

The study also recommends the use of a pacifier the raised surface of the pacifier keeps the baby's face away from the mattress...

The study emphasizes that sleep environment matters. Soft bedding products are also linked to infant deaths. Bumper pads, quilts, stuffed animals and blankets can easily cause the problem of increased carbon dioxide levels when fresh air is blocked and the baby re-inhales the air he has previously breathe.

Recommendations to keep a baby safe and reduce the risk of SIDS are

Put baby asleep on his back

Use a pacifier

No soft bedding

Run a fan near the baby

No second hand smoke.
