Traditional Backpack Versus Rolling Backpack
Although it may not be the beginning of the school year, your child's school supplies and gear may be running out or falling apart by now and it may be time to reevaluate your choice in backpack.
Since fourth grade has demanded much more homework than previous years, I decided that we had made a bad choice in backpacks. With all the school supplies and school gear needed, we had made our choice on backpacks like the other years based on looks and price. Once your child enters a grade where they are bringing home several heavy books on a regular basis as well as musical instruments you may need to consider a rolling backpack. Although the decision may not be yours alone to make.
If you read your child's school handbook, many schools actually prohibit the use of rolling backpacks as a safety hazard. Apparently there is some concern that rolling backpacks may cause other students to trip or could be dropped on stairs and injure the people behind the backpack if it is dropped. Although this may be legitimate so is the argument that smaller children in elementary school have not developed enough strength to carry so much on a regular basis and may be harming their bodies by using a traditional backpack. This may be the reason why our school in Laguna Niguel does not enforce the rolling backpack rule although I have read it in the handbook. Many kids once they enter third or fourth grade begin using the rolling backpack. In addition our school has no stairs so that safety precaution is not needed.
If you find yourself in the market for a new backpack then consider your child's homework load and how much gear they are carrying over price and looks. Do some research before you head out to buy a new rolling backpack because they are pricier than traditional carried backpacks. We researched Walmart which had them for about $35 and since Big 5 Sporting Goods is near us in Capistrano Beach we started there.
If you have a sporting goods store near you then this may be the best place to start because they often have sale or clearance items they are trying to move. Our Big 5 had an entire wall of backpacks and although many of them were traditional we found about five varieties of rolling backpacks. Most were priced in the $30 range but after some searching we found one on sale for $19.99, a real steal. My daughter initially wanted the $39 one but after I explained the $20 difference and that she could even get a new binder she quickly agreed and became very excited about the new backpack and binder.
This morning when I woke her up she didn't roll over and ignore me like most days. She quickly woke up and got ready for school, excited to use her new backpack and binder at school. When I dropped her off in front of school, she quickly popped her new backpack out and pulled it behind her without the struggle and juggeling act she usually deals with each morning. I felt very good about this purchase.
