I was in the market for a new pair of shoes and saw the "Going Out of Business" sign in the dusty front window of the store. I had passed by the place many times before and had glanced in the window, but the shoes all looked very out of date and they were expensive. So I ended up buying a pair of black canvas All-Stars even though I really didn't need them. I think that it was for two reasons: One, I wanted to help the old guy out, and two, now I am able to brag to my friends, resplendent in their expensive Nikes, that I have the "real" thing.
Ninety-eight percent of all shoes sold in the United States are made overseas; some eighty-four percent are made in China. A typical pair of sneakers cost about $5 to make. You really are paying for a name, and paying through the nose for it.
The folks at Adbusters Magazine (www.adbusters.org) have come up with a pair of sneakers that they call the "Anti-brand" brand. The shoes, called the Blackspot Unswoosher, (a takeoff on Nike's familiar trademark) are the most Earth friendly shoes on the market. They are made from woven hemp and are 70% biodegradable. The rubber soles are made from recycled tire tread. Instead of being made in China, they are made at a union family-owned factory in Portugal. This raises the manufacturing cost up to $30 instead of $5, but people seem willing to pay a little extra for an Earth-friendly, ethical product rather than a big brand name.
