ClosetMaid 31" Horizontal Organizer: Review
Quick to assemble, this 31" long two shelf storage unit is perfect for organizing shoes in our walk in closet.
I love shoes, and about 30 different pair of them. I have my winter shoes, summer sandals, dress shoes, sports shoes, boots, and slippers. All of these take up a lot of space, and I decided it was high time I organized them so my closet looked a little neater.
We already own a smaller horizontal shelf similar to this in our entry way, so I knew how easy these units were to put together. The piece consists of two pieces of particle board with white colored laminate sides. The top of the shelves are white, but the under side look like particle board, but this isn't a big deal because it doesn't show.
The exact dimensions of the shelving unit are 11 5/8" high, by 31" wide, and it is 11 5/8" deep. There is a top shelf, and a second shelf directly below it, and when this is sitting on the floor in my closet, the floor acts as the third shelf, because one pair of shoes fits perfectly below the bottom shelf. I can easily store 12 pairs of shoes in this one unit.
Assembly is simple, all you will need is a Phillips head screwdriver and a hammer. The directions that come with this kit are very basic and minimal. If you can put something together by following a diagram, you'll be all set. There are no written instructions at all. All of the holes in the wood shelves are pre-drilled. Two screws go into each end of the top shelf, two more screws go into each end of the center shelf, and there are little round plastic white colored cover caps that hammer down into the screw, to hide it. These screws are not recessed into the wood, they don't even sit flush, and do stick out the width of the screw head, so the covers will hide the screw.
These shelves are designed to be able to stack more than one unit, so there are small holes in the center edge of the top on each side, which allows you to place a plastic plug that measures about 2" long. This pounds down into the hole about an inch, and will stick up an inch above the top of the shelf. You can then assemble another shelving unit and place it directly on top, making sure the holes on the bottom fit into the plug, which holds the shelves together quite nicely.
ClosetMaid makes these in different styles and widths, allowing you to customize your closet to your liking. I plan on returning to WalMart and purchasing two more, along with vertical shelving cubicles to hold sweaters. It's amazing how well these work, and they don't cost much. I put my shelf together in about 10 minutes!
If you want to organize your closet in a customized way, and you don't have a lot of money to spare, I would highly recommend the ClosetMaid organizers. Yes, they are just made out of particle board, but as long as you don't try to stand on them, they will hold up nicely.
