How to Get Your Wedding Dress on the Cheap
Your wedding doesn't have to empty your savings account in order to be stylish or festive. In fact, with a little elbow grease, some creativity and a dash of determination, your wedding can be a work of art on a shoestring budget.
An inexpensive wedding gown doesn't mean something ugly or poorly made. First, your wedding gown doesn't have to be white (unless you have always wanted to be married in a white dress). It also doesn't have to be a wedding dress at all, in fact, sometimes you can find a dress that looks like a wedding dress, but because it isn't called a wedding dress, it is significantly less expensive. I was married in a gorgeous green bridesmaid's dress (half off!), my mother was married in a dark purple dress and a close friend was married in a sleek, modern pantsuit. This is your big day, and if you don't want a dress or white, then don't do it.
Whatever option you decide on, start out by looking at dresses and dress styles you like in magazines and bridal shows. Pick out the details you especially like and keep a list or cut out the pictures. Knowing what you like will help you when you are shopping and, if you happen to be handy with a sewing machine, if you decide to make your own dress or alter something you find. You may also find that what you like in a dress is not in style (and will be less expensive), or you may be able to snap up some killer ideas to use in altering or embellishing a cheaper dress that you find.
Sewing your own dress can be an inexpensive option, but keep a close eye on your fabrics. It is surprisingly easy to run up a fabrics and embellishments bill that is equal to a ready-to-wear gown. If you have enough time, you could even pay a dressmaker to custom-sew your dress for substantially less than you would pay for a dress off the rack. This option leaves your horizons completely open for design, accessories and even color, although not an option for every bride-to-be. McCall, Butterick and Vogue all have patterns rated from easy to expert and many of these patterns are available for order online through a variety of sites. Make sure you try on gowns in the style you are considering to be sure the style is flattering to you, and begin your gown when you begin planning as some fabrics and accessories may need to be ordered.
Another inexpensive option when considering dress styles is not a dress at all, but a skirt and top combination or a pantsuit (like my friend). Auction sites, the local thrift stores and the prom dress section of your favorite clothing stores are good places to find cheap dresses. Make sure, if you choose a used dress, that you have examined it closely for tears, stains and other imperfections. If the dress will need to be altered, have an idea how much various alterations will cost - it would be a shame to save on a used dress only to have the repairs and fittings end up costing more than you would have paid had you gone with a new dress.
Once you find the dress, or one that is close, but missing some little thing, you can add a layer of tulle or similar material to make the skirt fuller, longer or as embellishments. Tulle is a very inexpensive (and simple) way to transform a dress and often can be left unhemmed. If you choose to puff out your dress with tulle, consider lining it as this can be a very itchy fabric. You can lengthen a short dress by floating tulle over the skirt, or add interest and detail to a simple dress. You can also add old lace or other vintage touches to personalize your gown.
Your wedding day should be as special and unique as you are. Saving on your dress shouldn't mean compromising on quality or originality. With these tips and your own ingenuity, you will be able to get what suits you, your style and your budget.
