Stop Swelling Feet and Ankles in a Few Simple Steps

Swelling in your feet and ankles can cause uncomfortable, almost unbearable, pain, including tighter shoes, annoying throbbing, and sometimes trouble walking. Here are a few tips to prevent ankle and feet swelling, promoting happy feet, and a happier you.

During my last appointment with my family doctor, I decided to ask him if there were any steps that I could take to avoid swelling in my feet and ankles. Here are a few tips he gave me, which will help anyone who may be experiencing this highly uncomfortable ailment.

The first way to keep your ankles and feet from swelling is to markedly reduce your salt intake. Having large amounts of salt in one's system leads to fluid retention, so cutting back on the use of it in your cooking and in foods that you consume when eating out will greatly help you in releasing the fluid your body is holding, thus reducing any fluids that may be building up in your feet and ankles.

Second, it is important to wear loose or at least appropriately fitted clothing. If your clothing is too tight, it restricts the distribution of fluid in your body, leaving the fluid to settle more in certain areas than in others. Think about what happens when you put a tight rubber band around your wrist. Wearing clothing that is too tight is basically doing the same thing to the areas being squeezed. The fluid has to go somewhere, and gravity will play a major role in pulling that fluid down toward your feet and ankles. A good tip to remember is, if your clothing is leaving indentations on your skin, it's time to trade up to a larger size.

Third, try to wear flat shoes so that blood can be evenly distributed throughout your entire foot. I know that we women love our sexy stiletto heels, but remember that while wearing them, your foot is continuously in a downward angle, leaving all of the blood traveling to your feet to gather at the ball, where most of your weight is also being supported. With both an excess of blood in one area, and the pressure of your weight also being supported by that one area in heels, the foot has no choice but to try to expand to compensate.

Lastly, try to elevate your feet as much as possible, preferably above the level of your heart. When your feet are elevated, gravity has the opportunity to step in, this time to your advantage, driving all of the blood from the lower part of your body back to the heart, where there blood has a chance to be redistributed evenly to the rest of your body.
