How to Travel Back in Time: Big Screen Classics at the Lafayette Theater in Suffern, New York

The first time I stepped into the Lafayette theater, one of the longest running movie theaters in the world, I had a transcendent experience. If you love classic films, you'll love this film.

The first time I stepped into the this temple of the cinema was to attend their weekly "Big Screen Classics" event. Every Saturday morning the theater projects an actual film print of a cinema classic, introduced by live organ music and perhaps a few classic cartoons. I was a college student at the time, and needless to say, getting up at 9 something in the morning on a frigid Saturday during finals week didn't seem very fun. It seemed downright cruel. Masochistic. But suffering, especially of the self-imposed kind, often leads to enduring transformations.

I rushed. For some reason, this event was so important to me. By the time I made it to the theater (a nearly hour long drive from my house) I had missed the pre-show music and was just barely cutting in to the start time for the film. I crashed through the glass doors and up to the old-style ticket booth, hurriedly asking the teenage girl for one ticket to The Big Sleep like an absolute mad man. I must have looked like I wanted her blood or something- hair a mess, eyes shot, huffing and puffing. She calmly gave me my ticket, I rushed past concessions to open the door to the dark room brimming with the warmth of attending bodies.

On a stage at the far end, in front of a luxurious red curtain, stood a man in spotlight giving some background about the film. What immediately caught my eye was the decor. Giant gold framing. Intricate designs on the railings. Several balconies. My wide eyes wandered up to see an imposing chandelier, hanging from a painted ceiling resembling Michaelangelo's Sistine Chapel. The Sistine Chandelier.

I wandered to a seat in the half-dark, half-packed room. I sat, attending, awaiting, anxious. The man finished his introduction and marched off stage. The spotlight extinguished, the house lights dimmed, and the grand red curtain parted to reveal white canvas that was almost immediately filled with a familiar studio logo- though much older looking.

The Big Sleep started up. For anyone who hasn't seen it, it's one of the most convoluted, confusing movies ever made. But who cares? There I was, watching Bogart riff and mug on glorious, gigantic black and white film in an palace of a theater. I remember marveling at the lush brightness of the truly silver screen. At some point during the film, I actually looked around at the shadow heads and the golden railing and the pipe organs and the big silver screen and realized I could just as well have been at the premiere in 1946. There were literally no indicators to tell me otherwise, and for a few seconds, I felt almost frightened at the surreal nature of the situation. Cinema- a pure cinematic experience- had truly gripped me and transformed me that day. And it had less to do with the film than the experience- knowing that this place, these people, actually cared about film history.

This is the Lafayette theater, one of the longest running movie theaters in the world. Built in the mid 1920s, the Lafayette has lived through the silent era, the Depression and Hollywood's "Golden Age" of the late 30's/40's. Today, it has survived through various re-constructions and continues to play first-run films that bring in customers 7 days a week. But what makes this theater a gem isn't its current releases, obviously, it's the chance to have experiences like the one just described. After The Big Sleep I went on to attend such other classics as Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, His Girl Friday, Charade, and, my personal favorite, Charlie Chaplin's City Lights. Even though City Lights is a silent film from 1930, the audience was comprised of nearly every age age range from toddlers to seniors. And they were all laughing. That's the power of Chaplin and the power of cinema.

The Lafayette still holds Big Screen Classics every Saturday morning during Winter and Spring seasons. Check out their website for schedules and information:
