What is a Valkyrie?

The valkyries are an important part of Norse mythology, and they act as demigoddesses of death. Their names mean "choosers of the slain", and they pick who is valiant in battle.

Valkyries, warrior maidens who served Odin, were those whose names translated to "choosers of the slain." These women, often depicted as blond, blue eyed beauties who would ride horses or wolves down from the sky while wearing armor and carrying weapons, were tasked with choosing the bravest and most capable warriors from any battlefield that they might train further and serve in the gods' own army when the final battle came. The valkyries, who were lead by the Vanir goddess of love and death Freya, took this charge very seriously. Of course there was a caveat; half of those chosen went to Odin's hall in Valhalla while the other half went to Folkvang, Freya's own hall which also held women and slain lovers.

Heathen mythology claims that the valkyrie could take the form of carrion ravens who were always seen circling battlefields. This identified them both as those who picked among the slain as well as bringing them closer to Odin, who had to ravens that would circle the world each day and bring news to him. This is also similar to the myth of the swan maidens, and some legends state that like Freya, who bore a treasure of the gods in a coat of falcon feathers, fit into this myth and it bled into the other valkyries taking the form of birds. If a swan maiden could be caught without her feathers then she would have to stay with the person who held her pelt, or grant that person a wish to be free.

The exact number of valkyries also varies depending on the legend you read. Their purpose, to choose the fallen warriors and to host them in Valhalla during the night's feasting and quaffing of mead, is always the same. However, the legends list as few as three or as many as twelve valkyries. In addition to Freya the goddess Thrud, daughter of the mighty Thor, was said to be one of the valkyries. Brunhilde, who figures prominently in the story of the hero Seigfreid, was also said to be a valkyrie who was caught and wed by the proud Viking as part of his saga of tragedy.

Though there have been comparisons to Christian angels, valkyries bear a much stronger resemblence to the goddess Morrigan, a savage and bloody battle goddess worshipped by the Celts. Valkyries also play an important role in Asatru, which is the modern faith that is a modern recreation of the pagan faith practiced by the old Norse peoples. However, whether you view them as another culture's version of angels, a servant of a divine power, or an interesting historical footnote, the valkyries have ingrained themselves in modern culture and language to the point that they've become their own sort of immortal.
