Profiled as a Homeless Man, I was in the Shoes of One for a Moment
In the "wrong" place at the "wrong" time you could be taken as a homeless person
Recently, I have been taking my book sack and walking about four blocks to a major grocery store where my routine is the same every morning. The first thing I do is get a small cup of complimentary coffee. Then I walk over to the pet food isle and get several cans of cat food. There are a few cats behind the building I feed each morning, and then I walk back inside for a coffee refill before I walk back home. On this particular morning I ran into a homeless man who stays outside nearby. He recognizes me from feeding the cats, and in fact feeds them sometimes as well, with cans being thrown out by another store in the shopping center. I have seen the man make small purchases and also get some coffee.
Today as we both approached the coffee kiosk I made a joke about why buy coffee when you can get it here for free. Suddenly I hear a voice and notice a store employee in the nearby produce section. She said, "Well, some people have to work for a living." At first I did not understand what she meant. The homeless man said nothing. I said, "Oh, so you buy your coffee then?" The woman said, "No, I don't drink coffee." When I turned around from her the homeless man was gone. Then it occurred to me the woman thought I was homeless. I said, "Well, I am off work for awhile until activity picks up." She said nothing and I walked out of the store.
Was I just profiled as a homeless person? I don't know. As I walked home I called and spoke with a manager. He apologized and knew the homeless man I was seen with. He said the employee often jokes with that partucular homeless man and has a very dry sense of humor. I really found it difficult to accept that explanation since the homeless man never said a word, and the employee was responding to my remark.
Further, after she let it be known she works for a living, if it was a joke the homeless man was not laughing - in fact he bolted out the door. I am surprised the employee did not recognize me as I have been shopping at the store for seven years, and the manager said she has been working there for many more years than seven. But, I rarely go to this store in the mornings, so that might explain it. I guess I can say now I know what it feels like to be homeless, and to be treated badly because of it, because, as the employee said, "Some people have to work for a living."
