'Nashville' Episode 8: Rings of Fire (Recap)
Rayna and Juliette's song is a huge success, Teddy comes clean to Rayna. Scarlett and Gunnar get a big break, Avery is offered an opportunity, and someone gets a marriage proposal on "Nashville"
Teddy Conrad (Eric Close) comes clean to Rayna about the photos with Peggy Samper (Kimberly Williams-Paisley), but Rayna can't believe Coleman would do such a thing.
Juliette get flowers and praise from Marshall but she doesn't want flowers, she wants her tour back. Her "choir boy" Sean Butler (Tilky Jones) jogs to Juliette's house the "Tennessean" with a photo of her and Rayna performing their duet. She tries to entice him to stay a little longer and inquires, "How long are you going to keep up this no sex until you are married thing?" "Until I am married," he replies explaining it's just how he was raised. Then Sean surprises Juliette by inviting her to church to meet his family. She accepts, but the look on her face clearly says, "Church???"
Deacon Claybourne's (Charles Esten ) old friends the Revel Kings want him to hit the road with them because he's a good person to bring on tour now that the band is all sobered up. What is keeping Deacon tied down in Nashville now? they ask. He no longer has a good answer.
Hailey tries to get Scarlett "Ring of Fire" O'Connor (Gunnar Scott's new nickname for her) to try out for a band that needs a new singer. Hmmm...I wonder what her motives are... Scarlett (Clare Bowen) tells Gunnar (Sam Palladio) that Hailey suggested she try out for a band, and the idea doesn't sit too well with him.
Meanwhile, Avery Barkley (Jonathan Jackson) is singing his little heart out while Marilyn talks shop with Dominic King. Avery tells Dominic he and band mate JT have been playing together since a junior high assembly at their Catholic school.
Rayna goes to see Coleman who explains he had to act because, "Teddy and Lamar have been lying about me for so long." Coleman shows her the photos, and while Rayna looks troubled, she stands by her man.
Juliette rushes into church a little late to meet Sean's family. Sean's little sister Dana, who really is a choir girl, is obviously a fan and she invites Juliette to sing with the choir. Juliette sings the song "For Your Glory" in church while Sean looks on lovingly. His mother invites Juliette to dinner, and a giddy Juliette says yes enthusiastically. Juliette shows up with flowers for Sean's mom and expensive pink boots for Dana.
Tandy Wyatt (Judith Hoag) reassures Rayna that Teddy is not cheating on her, saying "Who is going to cheat with his sister-in-law around?" while Peggy Samper shows up at Teddy's campaign headquarters, desperate because her husband has seen the photos. Teddy firmly sends her away.
Scarlett is picking but not grinning on her uncle Deacon's steps when Avery walks up with a bottle of champagne they saved for when he got his big deal. "We should have opened it up when you got your deal," he says, handing her the bottle and sadly walking away. Later Dominic tells him he only wants to work with just Avery, not his band. Marilyn advises Avery not to kill his career before it starts. How much is Avery willing to give up for his career?
Rayna wants to know why she was not included in a family meeting to discuss Teddy's photos. Lamar says they have it under control. "You do NOT have it under control," she says, pointing out her daughters are likely to see compromising photos of a father they idolize. As they talk, the photos are already online.
"Did you tell Scarlett to join a band?" Gunnar demands of Hailey, saying he wonders why she would be splitting up their writing team. She says his reaction is weird since bands play at night and songwriters write during the day. "What's weird is you are trying to separate Scarlett and me," he says. Hailey says Gunnar clearly has been staking a claim on Scarlett and tells him, "It's over, Gunnar. It's always been over." Gunnar goes to the Bluebird and admits to Scarlett that he couldn't take his eyes off her when she was singing "Ring of Fire" at the bar. "You have more talent than anyone I know, and someone should tell you that every day," he says passionately. They start to kiss but Scarlett breaks it off.
Peggy tries to commit suicide with pills, but her husband finds her and calls paramedics. Rayna is driving by as the paramedics are carrying Peggy out. She wants to know what happened, thinking it was an affair after all, so Teddy comes clean about the Cumberland deal.
Gunnar and Scarlett are introduced for a duet at the Bluebird, but Scarlett says she can't do it. In a moving sequence of vignettes, Gunnar sings the poignant "When the Right One Comes Along" while Scarlett waits tables, while Juliette enjoys dinner with Sean's family, and while Rayna and Teddy go home. Then Rayna confronts Teddy about his crimes.
Sean's mother kills Juliette's perfect night when they are alone in the kitchen, telling her they didn't have any choice but to invite her to dinner. Mrs. Butler confronts Juliette about her "brand" and her mother, and says if Juliette has any illusions about joining Sean's family, "Don't hold your breath, sweetie."
Deacon drops by Juliette's house and he tells her about the offer from Revel Kings that he is considering. "What is there to even think about?" she demands. Deacon gives her a note from her mother and reveals he has been checking up on her mom who wants to make things right. "I know how important family is, Deacon, because I never had one," Juliette informs him.
Deacon meets Rayna to check on her after the photos come out. He tells her he has been asked to tour with the Revel Kings. She tells him he needs to see what's around the next bend. Deacon meets with the band and says, "Let's do it."
Rayna comes to Teddy's defense at his press conference. "These pictures don't do anything other than show the desperation of some people who are trying to bring us down." Teddy thanks Rayna sincerely, but she tells him coldly, "I did it for our daughters."
Scarlett is still confused saying she needs a little time, and Gunnar walks out. However, they are called to their manager's office where they are told their first song has been put on hold, their first big break, and their "successful partnership" is toasted.
The world loves Rayna and Juliette's duet. Their single has shot both of them to the top of the charts. Rayna is given an offer she may not be able to refuse: an arena tour co-headlining with Juliette in 80 cities, with both women alternating closing every other night, striking while the song is so hot, to which Rayna replies, "I'm not saying no."
Juliette pulls out all the stops at her candle-lit pool when she invites Sean over. She tells him she had a heart to heart with his mom the previous night about family (skipping the part where Sean's mother said Juliette would never be a part of their family). Reaching for his hand, she asks, "Will you marry me?"
