Winter Walking Workout
You can lose weight, even when it's too cold to go outside
Minutes 1 to 5: Start warming up the muscles by walking at a moderate pace. Since you will be doing this workout on a treadmill, adjust the incline settings for 1 percent. Your rate of perceived exertion (RPE) should be a three to four*.
Minutes 5 to 15: Use intervals to increase calorie burn and stamina. For each minute on the treadmill in this segment, increase the treadmill incline up by 1 percent and walk as briskly as possible. Your RPE should be a six to eight.
Minutes 15 to 16: Use this time to regain breath and slow down heart rate by bringing down the incline back to a 1 percent. Keep a normal walking pace for these two minutes.
Minutes 16 to 20: Begin walking briskly and increase the incline to 12 percent. Increase the speed of the treadmill until you have an RPE of between seven and eight.
Minutes 20 to 24: You're almost done! Raise the incline one more time to 13 percent. If you can raise it higher, increase the incline as much as you can and walk briskly. Your RPE should be at an eight during this segment.
Minutes 24 to 27: Bring the incline back to 12 percent and continue to walk as fast as possible. Though your incline is still high, you should keep your RPE at around a six to seven.
Minutes 27 to 30: Bring down the incline gradually until you are back to a flat surface and decrease your walking speed during this cool down. Your RPE should be at a four while you finish up the workout.
Try to do this 30 minute workout at least five times a week. On days where you are looking for an extra calorie burn, you can repeat this workout a second time. According to Shape Magazine, this workout burns 240 calories, based on a 145-pound woman.
Using a treadmill for this workout is more beneficial than going outdoors because you can control the incline level. The incline helps you burn an additional seven calories per minute and tones muscles while you burn fat, boost the metabolism and improve heart health. Walking on an incline tones hamstrings, quadriceps, glutes and calf muscles for an total lower body workout.
