Hiking Safety Tips
Hiking is a fun way to get exercise, but it does require planning and knowledge. Even a veteran hiker can run into trouble if some of these steps are missed.
Calorie wise, hiking is one of the best ways to get in shape and keep fit. It usually involves multiple types of terrain, and if you are carrying appropriate equipment, it just adds to the benefits. It is not without its dangers. Hiking without adequate preparation has brought harm to more than one hiker. Here are some tips:
Buddy System: Never hike alone. Even if you are on a well used path, there is always the chance that something will happen and no one will come along in time to render aid. Having someone available to get help or to give it can be critical to living through a hiking accident.
Tell People: You need to let people know where you are going, any specifics as to a trail and when you expect to be back. If no one knows you're gone, it may be days before they figure out that you went for a hike and didn't come back. News reports either praise the amount of info left so that a successful rescue has happened or they bemoan the fact that the hiker didn't leave information so a timely search couldn't be conducted.
Stay on the Trail: No matter how well you know the area, the folks searching for you may not. If you leave the trail, it will be difficult for anyone to find you.
If Lost: Even experienced hikers may misread a trail and end up lost. If this happens, stay put. A moving target is a lot harder to find than one that stays in place.
What to Take: A knife and water are two of the most important things you can take, even if you only plan to be gone for a couple of hours. When we went hiking, I brought along a backpacker's first aid kit. They make them for hikers, but the backpacking kit has more useful stuff in it. You should also bring food and something to start a fire.
Please note: Some trails are permanently marked as no fire zones. Some are marked that way under certain conditions. Find out from the rangers or parks department before you ever set foot on the trail.
Critter Watch: Snakes, bobcats, mountain lions and other creatures live in the areas we hike. It's their territory. When hiking, make sure you know what is likely to be in the area and how to react if you spot one.
Rangers and Parks Dept.: If there is a way to get information about trail conditions, animals likely to be around, weather problems or other dangers, you need to access it. Parks often have a ranger station and the folks in them can give you a lot of information. In fact, the weather is a critical thing. There are times when rescuers won't be able to rescue due to these conditions. If that happens, it is wise to avoid the hike.
Getting out of the city and away from stressors is good for all of us. Hiking is an excellent way to do it, and if you follow the rules, it can be safe.
