I was a Very Tall Woman at the Symphony and Loved It!
Here's a message to tall women who hate their height: boy, do I envy you. I'm just mediocre tall, at 5-8. So at the symphony I wore high heel boots with a one-inch shoe lift, bringing me to six-feet tall.
There were seven other women in there, all senior citizens. I needn't say more. This height disparity was parallel to what the naturally very tall woman goes through all the time with younger women. I imagined that I went through it all the time, and couldn't imagine hating it ever. I just loved towering over those senior women. But I also realized that one day, I'd start losing height. I imagined those women were much younger, and thought, Why do so many very tall women hate towering over other women?
Why do very tall women hate seeing eye-to-eye, or even looking down a little, on groups of men? For the life of me, why would any woman want to have to look UP at most men? This would put them in a "position of inferiority." I spotted only two other women at the symphony who were naturally taller than me. They were senior citizens, and (not surprisingly) wearing flats. Most symphony goers on Sunday are senior citizens, and I have YET to see a tall senior woman wearing high heels.
It's not a matter of comfort, because many shorter senior women, including those who appear to have osteoporosis and hip problems, wear high heels. I've even seen old women pushing walkers, wearing high heels. So that leaves only one other reason why the tall senior women always wear flats: They believe that towering over other women is not normal.
I've read many posts on the tall quotes page of tallwomen.org, written by young women, who desperately want to be or feel "normal." If you are an extra tall woman or teenager who does not feel normal, due to your height, then see how many YES's you can give to each of these questions:
1) Can I walk without any problem?
2) Can I run and skip without any problem?
3) Can I get in and out of chairs or cars without any problem?
4) In and of themselves, do my legs look okay? (no skin problems, rash flare-ups, warts, etc.)
5) Does my back work without any problem?
6) Do my hands, arms and shoulders work?
7) Can I see, hear, feel, taste and smell?
8) Can I think, figure things out, add, subtract, write, read, spell decently and get along with people?
