Researchers Find People Without Gene for Smelly Sweat Still Use Deodorant
Researchers find people who have sweat that doesn't smell bad tend to use deodorant anyway.
A team of researchers in Bristol England, working on a project called "Children of the 90's" has found that the majority of people born without a gene that causes their sweat to smell bad, use antiperspirants or deodorants regardless. Live Science, in commenting on the research suggests that social norms are so strong in people, that they are able to overlook reality and as a consequence, engage in a nonsensical activity. The Daily News goes father, suggesting that some people may even be deluded into believing their sweat smells bad, when it really doesn't.
As Live Science points out, scientists have known for some time that a lot of people lack a gene that causes the excretion of a certain hormone in the body that is attractive to certain types of bacteria - which generally show up in the armpits. Bacteria eat the hormone and then expel material on the skin on a period bases. It's the bacteria excrement that causes people to smell bad when they sweat. But for approximately 2 percent of Caucasians, the absence of the gene means no matter how much they sweat, it will never stink. The percentage goes up dramatically for people from Asia, with almost 100 percent of Koreans missing the gene (deodorants and antiperspirants are not generally sold in Asia for this reason.)
But that doesn't stop them from applying deodorant or antiperspirant in the US and Europe, the researchers say. As part of their overall study, they found that approximately 78 percent of women that were missing the gene used such products regardless. They note that the same gene is also responsible for producing dry, as opposed to sticky earwax, which some have used as a means of confirming what they might have believed - that unlike others around them, their sweat isn't offensive.
The researchers also pointed out that it's not just sweat that appears in the arm pits that's involved either - it's any kind of sweat, which means such people can undergo hard rigorous physical activity that produces a lot of sweat, without having to worry about offending others with their smell. They can skip showers, for example, or in fact go for days on end without bathing and never have to worry about causing a stench. There is a limit of course, they note, other elements eventually conspire to create an odor - rotting skin cells, oil from the hair, chemicals in the air, etc. But why those that don't have the gene continue to behave as they do, will likely be the subject of future studies on peer pressure.
