The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry - Movie of Love & Forgiveness - Starring Gavin MacLeod
This is really a movie for young children, but it will benefit any age group.
Two main things in the movie kept the children captivated. There was a love story going on between one of the boys who liked a girl that was working in the local pizza shop. There was also bullying going on, which is a big problem in schools today.
Gavin MacLeod, former Love Boat starr, played the part of Mr. Jonathan Sperry. One day he met a boy, Dustin, who attended his church and he gave him a job of mowing his lawn. Dustin was surprised when Mr. Sperry gave him $3. This movie was made just last year, but it was portrayed in the 1970's. So, $3 was a fair amount back then. Mr. Sperry told Dustin to ring Mr. Barnes bell across the street, and offer to cut his grass too because he wasn't well. Mr. Sperry said he would pay Dustin for it. What Dustin did not know, was that Mr. Barnes was drunk about four years ago and he killed Mr. Sperry's wife in a car accident. Dustin did not find this out until the end of the story after Mr. Sperry died. Dustin's mom told him the real reason why his wife died. Then Dustin finally realized that Mr. Sperry was a man of love and forgiveness.
Mr. Sperry held weekly Bible studies in his home for Dustin and his two friends. He told them the importance of telling others about Jesus. He took them to the cemetary where his wife was buried. He told them to closely listen to the tombstones and you will hear people saying, "Why didn't you ever tell me about Jesus? I am in a place of agony." As the three boys told their other friends about Jesus, each week the attendance in the Bible Study grew. Mr. Sperry taught these boys good truths from the Bible. At first the three boys did not even know where their Bibles were because they never read them. They all went home to find them and from then on, each night before going to bed, they all read for a while.
One day while Mr. Sperry and the three boys were eating lunch in the pizzeria, Chris, the bully, came in. He started to talk nasty to Mr. Sperry. Mr. Sperry reached out to him in love. He started telling him that he knew his dad years ago before he passed away and that he was a good man. He invited Chris over his house so that he could tell him all about his dad which he never knew. Mr. Sperry knew that Chris had a lot of anger in him which was the reason why he was such a bully. Eventually, Chris started to attend the weekly Bible studies and became a new person. He immediately told his other friends to stop bullying others.
At the end of the movie, Mr. Sperry dies and all the boys are in mourning. He truly left behind a great legacy for others to follow. When I heard that this movie first came out and what it was about, I knew that I had to see it with the kids that I babysit for. They loved it from the beginning to the end and learned some valuable lessons. I highly recommend this movie. It was so refreshing to watch compared to all the other junk and filth that is out there.
