Flip Flops: Friend or Foe?
Although flip flops may be your favorite summer shoes, they may not be good for you. Find out if this footwear is right for you.
Of course, when compared to going barefoot, flip flops are a better choice. Along with a little support, they also protect your feet from cuts and scrapes. When using public showers or a public swimming pool, they are more sanitary than going barefoot.
Despite the variety and cute styles to choose from, flip flops are not the ideal choice for people who have foot problems or do a lot of walking. With no arch support or shock absorption, foot pain is a common complaint of many folks who wear them.
Other problems found to be associated with prolonged wearing of these shoes are fungal infections between the great and second toe, hammer toes, and heel calluses.
Numerous injuries are seen each year at hospital emergency rooms all across the country. Many are foot injuries related to wearing flip flops in the wrong place at the wrong time. Some of these injuries include those inflicted by using this footwear while mowing or weed eating. Other things to consider are the increased risk of insect or snake bites, especially in rural areas.
As a medical professional myself, I highly recommend that people with diabetes not wear flip flops at all. Diabetics are at a high risk of developing ulcers of the feet, often leading to amputation due to poor circulation of the extremities. The slightest injury to the foot of a diabetic can cause a wound that is almost impossible to heal. Diabetics should always wear shoes that protect their feet, and consult with their family physician on proper footwear that is suited to each individuals needs.
Flip flops can also cause unnecessary injuries to feet and ankles. Many sprained ankles have been caused from trying to run or play in flip flops. Driving while wearing this type of shoe is also dangerous. A flip flop can easily get caught between the brake and gas pedals, causing otherwise avoidable accidents.
The best habit to get into when it comes to shoe choices is wear what is comfortable and offers adequate support for any chosen activity. Orthopedic or tennis shoes offer the best support and are well suited for excessive walking or outdoor activities such as backyard football, throwing a frisbee, or running with Rover. Save the flip flops for the beach or swimming pool.
So, I guess flip flops can be your friend and foe, depending on your choice of occasions in which you wear them. When your feet and legs hurt, you hurt all over. Just use good judgement on when to wear supportive shoes and when to put on your cool flip flops and go check out the action at your local swimming pool.
