Marine Corps Boot Review: Fire Watch
Fire watch is essentially as it relates to boot camp, the patrol or watch over the rest of the platoon.
Not everyone will have fire watch duty every night but you will probably have it a couple times a week, unless you are being punished in which case the drill instructors could insist that you take more time.
The fire watch schedule is made out by a recruit appointed to do so. In some cases, depending on that recruit's integrity, you could be in trouble if the two of you do not get along. They could assign you more often than others. Usually that recruit is afraid to get into trouble so most likely they will follow the rules.
When conducting fire watch, you will be dressed in your camouflage utilities with your duty belt on and armed with a "moonbeam" or flashlight. You and your partner will have a log book in which you will log in any events that occur during your time on duty. You will also write in anything that you have done such as patrolling the barracks or recruits that get out of bed to use the "head" or bathroom.
When on fire watch, you will also be expected to know the proper way to challenge anyone who comes into the barracks such as a drill instructor. You must execute the proper commands in the correct order. Failure to do this can get you into trouble with the drill instructors. In boot camp, you will learn the proper way to challenge.
If you have an emergency, you will be instructed to wake the drill instructor who resides in the office of the barracks.
All of these things are preparing you for life in the Marine Corps. They are all skills necessary to remember and implement at the appropriate time. When you get to the fleet, you will have fire watch duty assigned at different points of the base, usually the barracks. One thing that you must NEVER do is to fall asleep or lose focus during fire watch duty. This has serious repercussions.
All in all, fire watch isn't that bad. Yes, you will lose some sleep but you will also be learning how to protect your fellow recruits and eventually Marines.
