The Legend of the Sebago Lake Monster

Great campfire story for entertaining the entire family. Fun reading.

THE SEBAGO LAKE MONSTER

IT WAS BACK IN THE 60'S WHEN I FIRST HEARD its NAME,

THE BEAST THAT PUT "CHAMPY" AND "NESSY" TO SHAME.

FOR IT WASN'T CLAMS, RED HOT DOGS OR LOBSTER,

THIS REGION'S KNOWN FOR THE SEBAGO LAKEMONSTER!

I WAS TEN WHEN I SAW IT THE VERY FIRST TIME,

KIND OF GREEN AND ALL SLIMEY IN THE MOONLIGHT IT SHINED.

IT MOVED LIKE A WALRUS, OR RHINO OR SUCH

WITH A HEAD LIKE A COW, I DIDN'T LIKE IT TOO MUCH

ITS MOVEMENTS SOUNDED LIKE WAVES SLAPPING ON THE- HULL OF A BOAT,

AND GIANT FINS IT USED LIKE ARMS TO KEEP IT AFLOAT

IT LOOKED AT ME HARD AND BENT DOWN ITS HEAD

THEN THREE WORDS ARE ALL THAT IT SAID

"I AM HUNGRY" IT GROWLED AS I TURNED TO RUN

I WANTED TO BE IN THE CUDDY, THIS WASN'T MUCH FUN

SO THEIR I STAYED, EYES WIDE, WIDE OPEN

FOR IT TO SWIM AWAY IS WHAT I WAS HOPING

WHEN MORNING CAME, BRIGHTENED BY THE LIGHT OF DAY

I CAME OUT TO FIND THE MONSTER HAD GONE AWAY.

IN 72 I RETURNED TO THE LAKE, WITH FISHING IN MIND,

A TROUT OR A SPLAKE

I ANCHORED AT NIGHT, AT THIS BEACH THAT I KNEW,

AND THE COLEMAN STOVE WAS HEATING, MY DINTY MOORE STEW.

I HEARD THE WIND STARTING TO MOVE ACROSS THE LAKE,

AS A SLAPPING SOUND STARTED, YOU KNOW THE KIND THE WAVES MAKE.

SO I DISHED MYSELF SOME DINTY'S AND SAT IN MY CHAIR,

AS THE SUN WENT DOWN, AND THE STARS WERE ALL THERE.

WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE SURFACE BROKE FREE,

AND A GIANT COW LIKE HEAD, WAS LOOKING AT ME

I DID NOT NEED ANYMORE INFO THAN THAT,

I WAS IN MY BOAT AND GONE IN JUST SECONDS FLAT.

I REMEBERED THAT DAY WHEN I WAS JUST TEN,

I WASN'T GOING THROUGH THAT AMOUNT OF FEAR, EVER AGAIN

IT WAS AROUND 1990 WHEN I SAW IT AGAIN,

BUT I HAVE LEARNED TO BEWARE AND AVOID ITS DEN

STICK TO THE DEEP WATER AND AVOID THOSE SHALLOWS,

FOR TO MESS WITH THAT MONSTER IS A TRIP TO THE GALLOWS.

BUT ALL THIS IS PALE AND DOES NOT COMPARE

TO THE TIME I DROPPED ANCHOR RIGHT IN ITS LAIR

IT CAME UP IN A FLASH AND NEARLY SANK MY BOAT

IT SNARLED AND GROWLED I DON'T KNOW HOW I STAYED AFLOAT

THE FIGHT WAS ON AND I HELD ON TO THE WHEEL

MY ANCHOR WAS STUCK AT THE BOTTOM OF HIS TAIL

HE SWIRLED AND HE YELLED WITH A GROAN OF PAIN,

AND SET OUT DRAGGING ME ACROSS THE DEEPEST LAKE IN MAINE

HE WAS FORTY FEET FROM HIS HEAD TO HIS TAIL,

AND SWAM LIKE A FISH, A BIG SHARK OR A WHALE.

I DID NOT KNOW HOW LONG I WOULD LAST,

BECAUSE I DID NOT KNOW THAT A BOAT COULD GO THAT FAST

HE WENT INTO THE WATER AND THEN CAME BACK TO THE SURFACE,

LIKE A DOLPHIN HE SWAM AN EXPERIENCE I WON'T MISS.

HE HAULED ME PAST THE ISLANDS OF STONES,

OUT TOWARD THE MIDDLE WITH SPLASHES AND GROANS.

AS I LOOKED AT MY DASH AND THE SPEEDO HIT SIXTY,

I THOUGHT FOR SURE THIS WAS THE END OF ME.

IT WAS THEN THAT IT HAPPENED, WHAT EVERY BOATER FEARS,

THE BEAST WENT STRAIT UP AND UP FOR WHAT SEEMED LIKE YEARS.

HE ROSE AND HE ROSE RIGHT INTO THE STARS,

HIS HEADED TILTED BACK, HIS TAIL WAGGING TO GO JUST AS FAR.

A ROPE FELL FROM THE SKY AND COILED TO PORT

IT WAS MINE THAT CAME FREE AS I FEALT JOY OF SOME SORT

BUT THEN I REMEMBERED THE THING ON THE END

I HOPED IT WOULD MISS ME, I HOPED ITS PATH WOULD BEND

BUT NO SUCH LUCK, AS I THOUGHT I WAS DEAD,

THE ANCHOR THAT FOLLOWED HIT ME RIGHT IN THE HEAD.

I DON'T KNOW HOW BUT I REMAINED CONCIOUS TO SEE,

AS WHAT CAME NEXT TO BE BURNT FOREVER, IN MY MEMORY.

FOR AS WE ALL KNOW, EXCEPT FOR A FEW

WHAT GOES UP MUST COME DOWN AND THAT MEANS MONSTERS, TOO!

SO HERE HE CAME DOWN, LIKE A BASS WEIGHING TONS,

DOWN THROUGH THE AIR, FINS FLAPPING FOR FUN.

HIS BIG COW HEAD HAD A SINISTER SMILE,

WHEN HE HIT, WATER FLEW, FOR MORE THAN A MILE.

THE WAVE HE CREATED WAS AT LEAST THIRY FEET HIGH,

WHEN IT HIT MY BOAT IT CARRIED ME, STRAIT TO THE SKY.

AS I DRIFTED FOR MOMENTS SURROUNDED BY STARS AND NOT WITH A SOUND,

IT WAS THEN I REALIZED AGAIN WHAT COMES UP MOST GO DOWN!

SO A SCRAMBLED TO HANG ON TO THE CUSHION OF A SEAT,

FOR I KNEW ANY MOMENT ME AND THE SURFACE WOULD MEET.

THE LAST THING I REMEMBER ABOUT WHAT NEXT HAD HAPPENED

WAS THE SOUND OF THE WAVES AND THEIR MIND CRAZING SLAPPING.

EXCEPT FOR A VOICE THAT I SEEM TO RECALL, THAT DEEPLY MOANED,

NOW WATCH WHERE YOU ANCHOR AND LEAVE ME ALONE.

THE GOOD NEWS IS, THAT WAS THE END,

THE SEBAGO LAKEMONSTER WAS NEVER SEEN, OR HEARD FROM AGAIN!
