Youth Basketball Practice Procedures
Practice rules, policies and procedures to make sure your team gets the most out of their floor time.
7th Grade Boys Basketball Practice Procedures
• You are to be on the floor and dressed at 3:05.
• Players are expected to go GAME SPEED at all times. If there is a reason you cannot go GAME SPEED, be sure to inform the coach before practice.
• There is to be no walking or sitting during practice.
• All drills are to be changed in 10 seconds or less.
• Not all drills and scrimmages can be officiated. It is extremely important that you call any foul YOU commit. The player who is fouled may never make the call. If you knock the ball out of bounds or commit any other violation, it is your responsibility to make the call. All Greenfield players at all times (including pick-up games) should follow this policy.
• No negative behavior is allowed in practice (including body language).
• All practice rules are enforced at all times. This includes before and after practice, in the locker rooms and outside. We are responsible for all the school property. Each player is expected to treat all people and property with dignity and respect.
• Any infraction of practice procedure will result in the whole team participating in immediate conditioning drills.
Off Days
Many coaches wrestle with the idea of giving players off-days during the later parts of the season. We, as coaches love practice, and probably would hold five-hour workouts if we could get away with it, but players need rest. Often times that needed rest is mental and not physical. An occasional off day can do wonders for refreshing a tired team. We take one day off a week in the last three weeks of the regular season and have found that our players are fresher mentally and more physically fit than our opponents when we get into the post season.
Open or Closed
To open practice or close it, that is the question. First of all, you need to check with the guidelines of your particular athletic department. Some schools have firm rules regarding visitors on campus and whether or not practices must be closed to outsiders. Our practices are always open to parents of the players provided they do not become a distraction. I feel that the parents are a part of the team and are therefore welcome to be there while we work. However, by being a part of our team, they are then subject to our rules and must not be a negative force during our workout. Most parents choose not to come to practice but of those who do, most are polite and seem to understand what must happen in order for work to be done.
Our practices are not open to the student body though. Friends, girlfriends and siblings always seem to be a distraction and are therefore barred from our practices. It has taken us a while to establish our system and you need to consider all of your options and the consequences of each choice before you set a policy.
Whistle or No Whistle
Many coaches prefer to conduct their practices without using a whistle and I happen to be one of them. The idea is that by leaving the whistle out, players will get accustomed to the sound of your voice and react to that during game situations. We play a lot of games in loud gyms, but I have been pleasantly surprised to note that my players always seem to be able to pick my voice out of the crowd. I believe our "whistle-less" practices have a lot to do with that.
No matter what procedures you decide to adopt for your team, stay as consistent throughout the season as possible. Players know their playing time is won and lost on the practice floor and giving them a set a procedures they can rely on is the best way to get the most out your practice time.
