Chihuahua Training: Going in with the Right Tools and Attitude
Tips for training your Chihuahua. They are a different breed, so you have to approach the training in a different way.
Start training the day that you receive your Chihuahua. Whether it is potty training or crate training, it is best to introduce your new dog to what you expect of them instead of giving them time to set their own expectations. When potty training your Chihuahua you can you the paper method so that they will use the potty inside your house in a designated area or you can train them for outside use. When you see your pup raise its leg or start to squat pick them up and take them to the designated spot you want them to use. They will begin to go to that spot more and more on their own. A simple 'good boy' or 'good girl' could be enough positive reinforcement to train them on their own.
If you want to train your Chihuahua for tricks, this might be more tedious than you would think. This is especially true if you are inexperienced in training the breed. If you want to teach your Chihuahua to roll over or fetch, you may not get the same results that you would have if you were training a larger dog. Most Chihuahuas are food driven and if you have plenty of treats for positive reinforcement, you will probably have better results. If your Chihuahua does not get what you are trying to get them to do, gently push the dog into the desired position and give them a treat and soon they will do it on their own. Training should last about fifteen to twenty minutes each day. Some Chihuahuas will lose interest quickly and the training may take a negative turn. Never punish your dog during training. Most dogs and especially Chihuahuas do not respond to negative actions when training. Do not spank or yell at your dog. Show a little patience and you will see them pick up the behavior you want to instill in them gradually. Your Chihuahua wants to please you and when it figures out that by performing the asked behavior, it will gladly do your bidding.
