Is Hollywood Running Out of Movies

The past few years have seen some great movies, but also has seen many movies that are strangely similar. Studios are ripping ideas off each other and it is getting old.

Take two movies from this summer, Olympus Has Fallen, and, White House Down. They both featured two likeable and cool protagonists and both literally had the exact same premise. In one the white house was down and in the other Olympus (aka white house) had fallen. The names are so similar you can already tell they were going to be the same. So the plot was a bit different but essentially someone tried to take over the white house and some underdog saved the day.

My point is there have been a ton of movies like this in the past years. Not that level of similarity but still noticeably similar. Why do studios do this? Because they have no ideas of their own and their ultimate goal is to make money. All they have to do is make a better movie then their rivals. Thankfully there is a way to get out of this bad practice, books. Books have been around for hundreds and hundreds of years, they feature everything from dragons to time travel. They are a gold mine.

Some studios like New Line Cinema have seen the potential in books and exploited them, The Hunger Games, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Twilight (that one was horrible in my opinion). These are only some books of billions that appeal to teens, adults, and kids. Unfortunately a lot of these books need a big budget and studios aren't willing to dish out that kind of money to a project that could potentially fail. A movie that has been forgotten Eragon had some great potential, it could have been the next Lord of the Rings if it was done right. It had dragons, magic, dwarves, elves, and urgals (All taken directly from the book). It sounded great, it could have been amazing, but instead it kind of sucked OK it really sucked.

These are the kind of books that I would love to see made into movies. We need a break from zombies, sexy vampires, sexy werewolves, and other teeny bopper fads. Again remembering Twilight here. Bring back the good stuff, I want more classics. What happened to those movies that made history, they are gone. Now movies come out every year and then are forgotten and we move on. We need some good quality movies.

There are a plethora of stories to take from, books like Divergent, Ender's Game, and, The Ranger's Apprentice are getting some real support from studios like Red Wagon Entertainment and Summit Entertainment and are shaping up to be some great movies. The Ranger's Apprentice and Divergent have a lot of books in their series (The Ranger's Apprentice has 12 books in its series) and could make some serious long term money for their respective studios. Hollywood needs some new material and so they should turn to books.
