How to Keep Your Athletic Shoes Looking Cleaner and Lasting Longer
Take a few preventive and pro-active measures to prevent your athletic shoes from getting dirty and learn how to properly clean them when they do.
We love our tennis shoes and honestly, we put them through quite a beating. From rain and mud puddles, to snow and sleet, to hot humid weather, are shoes weather the storm. Our athletic shoes are bound to get dirty in no time. The average recommended lifetime of athletic shoes is six month. Your shoes can, however, last a little longer if you take the proper time to care for them and clean them.
No matter what type of fabric your athletic shoes are made of, there are things that you can do to help prevent them from getting really dirty and things you can do to clean them up once they do get dirty.
The first thing you need to do when you buy a brand new pair of shoes is spray them with some type of protective guard. There are many different products on the market such as Scotch Guard-which is the product I prefer to use on all of my shoes. By spraying your shoes when you first purchase them, this will help prevent dirt from sticking to the shoes, water from soaking into the fabric, and other things from staining the shoes. Spraying your shoes also make it a lot easier to clean them. Stains usually come out quicker and with less work. It is best to spray your shoes before you ever wear them, and then let them dry for at least 12 hours before wearing them.
Regardless if you spray your shoes or not, they will eventually get dirty. The best way to clean your shoes is with regular soap and warm water. There are a lot of products on the market for cleaning shoes, but honestly, regular soap and warm water is usually more than sufficient to get the job done. Although, let me warn you right now, that there are stains that no matter what you use on them, they just will not come out.
I do not suggest putting your shoes in the washing machine. You can take out your laces and place your laces in with a load of laundry, but I wouldn't suggest putting your shoes in there too. Washing machines have been known to cause shoes to shrink and certain fabric on shoes to wither quicker. However, washing machines will usually remove most stains from shoe laces. If your shoes laces are too dirty or frayed, then I would suggest buying a new pair for very little money at Wal-Mart.
Scrub the shoes to the best of your ability with a rag, soap, and warm water. You can also take out the insole and clean it with soap and water. No matter how hard you clean, you won't be able to get your shoes looking brand new again. But if you clean your shoes as soon as they get dirty, they will look newer and nicer longer. Once you've finished cleaning your shoes, stuff the insides of them with some paper towels and allow them to dry in a room in your house. Do not place them in the dryer because the heat can melt the glue. Also, do not place them in direct sun light because the sun can cause some fabric and glue to change color.
