Succeeding in SEO by Understanding it from Google's Point of View

Learn how to succeed in SEO by understanding how and why things work. Put yourself in Google's shoes and understand their goals behind SEO factors, from Google's point of view.

First of all what you need to know is that Google's goal, with their search engine, is to provide the best and most relevant results possible; and certainly to provide better results to the user than its competitors. By doing this Google ensures that Internet surfers return to them to conduct a search rather than going to their competition. The reasoning behind this is simple, money. Google provides sponsored ads on search engine results pages and makes an absolute killing from Internet surfers in this fashion. Now that you understand Google's ultimate motive, to provide the best search engine results possible, you can begin to understand different things that they take in to account for ranking websites and, therefore, you can understand what you need to do to succeed in SEO.

One of Google's main factors for ranking sites is through keywords. After all, who wants to get a website about baby diapers as their number one result when they search for online dating? This is all about providing the most relevant results possible so that a user gets the information that they are searching for. Google's algorithms looks at the keywords of your title, description, even domain and URL as well as the keyword density within the body text of your web page. keyword density is basically the number of times that your keyword appears in relation to the number of entire words in the body text of your web page, usually talked about as a percentage. Google wants to make sure that your web page is relevant, so it must posses the keywords that a user searches for. However, they also want to make sure that it is a quality web page and not useless spam, therefore you must not have the keywords appear too many times in your body text or it will appear to Google that you are trying to manipulate the search engine results pages and your content is worthless spam. A highly recommended keyword density is somewhere in the area of 3%-5%, or 3-5 times per 100 words.

Another tool that Google uses to decide how high up you should rank for certain keywords or key phrases, a combination of keywords, is backlinks. A backlink is a link to your website from another website. Google's take on this is that if your site is high quality, thus deserving to rank better, then other people will have no doubt seen it and talk about or recommend it. This is why backlinks help you to gain high search engine results positions. Google has taken this a step further and measures the effect of a backlink by multiple factors. One of the most important factors is the authority of the web page that is providing a backlink to you. Obviously if you are being linked to from sites like Microsoft.com then you are probably a more important website than if you are being linked to from joeshmoeblog.com. Another factor that is used to take into account the weight that a backlink holds is relevancy and anchor text. This means that if your site is about cars and a clickable link with the anchor text of 'cars' is placed on another car related website it will be much more beneficial than a backlink with not anchor text coming a website about pumpkin seeds. Google's thinking on this one is that if related sites, and sites that are possibly your competitors, mention you and link to you then you probably have some excellent content to add. And finally Google is said to only count links as backlinks, for SEO purposes, if they are absent of the no follow attribute. No follow is an attribute that precedes a link which is designed to tell Google that you are linking to a site but not attempting to mention it as a backlink. This was designed to cut down on spam and is mostly used in places where a person could add their own backlink to a website which belongs to someone else, most notably blog comments.

This brings us to the final of the three largest things that Google looks at when trying to determine how your website should rank in order to be at the top of their search engine results provided to their users. Content is king, as the saying goes. Content is measured in a couple of areas which include uniqueness, freshness and, as mentioned earlier, keyword density. Google will give less weight to a website that does not provide unique content. The feeling here is that if you are simply copy and pasting content from other websites you really are not what the user is looking for. Freshness is also given more weight, Google feels that sites which are more frequently updated are less likely to contain stale and out of date information which web surfers will have no use for. We will skip the keywords density since we just covered that.

Hopefully now you can get a better understanding of how and why SEO works the way it does by looking at through Google's point of view. Apply what you have learned here to your SEO strategies and you will be sure to succeed.
