Success, Common Air and Ray Charles Live! Currently Running in Los Angeles Area Theatre
Theatre for Theatre Lovers on more nights than few
So it was with some relief that I was able to connect with a couple of ticket agencies and publicity people and was able to find out about all the shows which are playing on off nights that people in the Los Angeles area are able to see.
One of the shows are just playing right now through December 3 is called "Common Air." Playing at the Lillian Theatre (1076 Lillian Way, Hollywood) and
produced by A SoulArt and Elephant Stageworks, "Common Air" is a one man show co-written by performer Alex Lyras with the assistance of a writer Robert McCaskill. This riveting and timely drama speaks about the paranoia of the current world and is set in an airport where one person's interpretation of some information they hear gets passed on down the line to a full-blown scandal.
Also playing on something of a choppy schedule is "Ray Charles Live!-A New Musical" (Pasadena Playhouse - 39 S El Molino Ave) written by the Pulitzer prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks, this new musical is an ensemble piece which charts the deepest parts of the Ray Charles life story. Also featuring Tony nominee Brandon Victor Dixon, this show is definitely worth your time and due to the fact that it plays on more than just weekend evenings, it is something that you can see very easily.
Another show playing on weeknights in the Los Angeles area is called "Success" (Stella Adler - Gilbert Stage - 6773 Hollywood Blvd second-floor, Hollywood) by Norman Beim. "Success" chronicles a couple's rise to fame and the costs of success. Not unlike many other young dreamers who come to the bright lights of Hollywood to try to seek out their fame and fortune this isn't a story of a couple who are actors and both of them have the need to be successful at any cost.
While the schedule moves in flux and flows from season to season it is encouraging to see that there are some shows which are not afraid of the weeknight performances in the Los Angeles area and these shows would be worth the time of anybody who goes to see them.
